"To preserve the history, heritage and traditions of Crystal Falls and surrounding areas through educational, entertaining and interactive displays as well as facilitating research opportunities to those seeking information."
Crystal Falls Museum Society - Harbour House Crystal Falls, Michigan
The Crystal Falls Museum Society welcomes you to the beautiful Harbour House Museum. The former Harbour family home was built at the turn of the 20th century and features a unique architectural steamboat style construction. The two story building accommodates wrap-around porches on both levels with a marvelous view of the city. The home is listed on the National Register of Historic Sites as "The Murphy Home."
The building was acquired for use as a museum by local philanthropist Howard Koob and renovated for that purpose over the next several years.
The first floor replicates a way of life during the early 1900's - a music parlor, library, and dining room connect a grand foyer at the entrance. A kitchen, located off the dining area, has its own entrance. All rooms are furnished with items from the era.
A staircase to the second level leads visitors to six exhibit rooms - the Mining/Logging/Railroad exhibit honors the building of the city and surrounding area; the Ladies Room features the contributions of women in the community; the Children's Room provides hands-on sharing of toys and items from the past; the School Room highlights the Forest Park Trojans academics and athletics; the Small Business/Outdoors room showcases a variety of what the area had to offer in the days of yore; and the Veterans Room showcases those who dedicated their lives to the country.
ARCHIVES AND RESEARCH - The Museum Society also has volunteers who help assist with researching family or community history projects. Birth, marriage and death indexes, Evergreen Memorial Cemetery burial records, mine locations and railroad maps may also be obtained by contacting the Society at email@example.com or by writing to P.O. Box 65, Crystal Falls, MI 49920.
The sights and sounds of Crystal Falls (past and present) are here. The Museum is open to the public year-round.
